1982 film about a family being terrorized by supernatural phenomena after moving into their new home. Directed by Tobe Hooper.
Poltergeist is a 1982 American supernatural horror film written and produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Tobe Hooper. The first and most successful entry in a multi-film series, Poltergeist focuses on a family whose home is overrun by supernatural forces which abduct their younger daughter. Spielberg fully intended to direct Poltergeist, but involvement in a concurrent project—namely, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial—contractually prohibited him from doing so.
Released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer on June 4, 1982, Poltergeist became a major critical and commercial success and was ultimately ranked eighth highest-grossing film of 1982. In addition to receiving three Academy Award nominations, Poltergeist was ranked #84th on the American Film Institute list, 100 Years...100 Thrills, a countdown of the country's most heart-pounding movies.
