I just finished the movie "Burn after Reading".

It's a black comedy but in the end when J K simmons says

What did we learn Palmer?

and he says

I don't know sir.

and then J .K simmons says

I guess we learn not to do it again.

What does this mean...what was the CIA doing?


There is no great takeaway from this exchange; it is ancillary to the storytelling.

As with most of Coen Brothers' movies, the resolution is not the focus in their telling of the story. They pay more attention on character development and the interplay of these characters. Simply put, it is a wry comment meant to put the cap on an otherwise absurd collection of events.
