I'd have to look up the definitions before making this a proper answer, but I think a commercial film is one that's shown commercially (i.e. at cinemas), whereas an art film is only shown at film festivals. – F1Krazy May 31 '18 at 16:21
  • So the moment an art film is shown at a cinema hall,it becomes a commercial one? – Susmoy May 31 '18 at 16:23

    Yep. That's if my definition is correct. – F1Krazy May 31 '18 at 16:26
  • Check out the director's name. If it's Terrence Malick then it's an art film. Otherwise it's commercial. – ibrahim mahrir May 31 '18 at 18:27
  • ... or Lars von Trier for that matter. – ibrahim mahrir May 31 '18 at 18:34

According to Wikipedia; An art film is typically a serious, independent film, aimed at a niche market rather than a mass market audience.[1] It is "intended to be a serious, artistic work, often experimental and not designed for mass appeal," "made primarily for aesthetic reasons rather than commercial profit",and contains "unconventional or highly symbolic content".

Whereas a commercial film is; A commercial film is normally made with entertainment value.

"Commercial" denotes a project intended to turn a profit in the commercial marketplace - as opposed to a limited-interest or short piece which is not intended or expected to compete in that market. Commercial films production purpose is to sell products, while fine art’s purpose is to be an aesthetic object to be appreciated for its fine and unique qualities. Commercial films includes advertising, graphic design, branding, logos, and book illustration, while fine art includes painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, installation, multi-media, sound art, and performance. Commercial films included television and print advertisements, and mass produced images, while fine art consisted of one-of-a-kind unique objects such as paintings, sculptures and works on paper that were exhibited in art galleries and museums. Commercial film making crew also includes singers, choreographers, musicians etc. These films are produced with huge budgets and may take longer period for the completion of the film. Commercial films are made for mass appeal and for all ages for entertainment. The films include comedy, dance, songs and grand settings and are shot at different locations. In these films the roles are played by popular actors and actresses. There may be many lead artists or popular star cast in the film depending on the story line.

Examples; Art films: Eyes Wide Shut, Barry Lyndon, Mulholland Drive, Lady Bird,Newton,Manchester by the Sea,Raman Raghav 2.0

Commercial films: Raes,Tiger Zinda Hai,Judwaa 2 Wonder Woman,Black Panther, Dunkirk
