    I believe it's explicitly stated at some point in the film that there were two burglars, but I'd have to watch it again to check.

    From the stills in the question it seems like it could be the same grey mask in dark lighting vs bright lighting.

    IIRC Leonard believed there were two burglars. One was killed by him, but the other got away and this is the John G. that he is trying to find since then.
