In a scene from Mank (2020), Marion and Mark are sitting face to face, near the tree where a car is parked.. They both discuss the "Citizen Kane" script:

Marion: I would have loved to playme...ten years ago.

Mank: It was never meant to be you...

Marion: For myself I don't care, Mank, really I don't. But I beg you: Don't kick Pops when he's down.

Here pops is Willie Hearst.

What exactly made Marion believe Mank is hurting Willie Hearst in this scene?

  • I'd rather understand that as: "is it really a good time to publish this?". The script is a kick to WRH, just wait until he can fight back?
