Jesus died on the cross to save humanity, but what did Father James die for? We see a parallel between the crucifixion of Christ and the death of James. The whole town goes against James before his death: he's beaten, ridiculed, people joke with him, and he's treated very poorly by the community in general. He's a scapegoat for everyone and most people dislike him. This is similar to way Christ was treated by the people before his crucifixion.
However, unlike Christ, Father James performed no miracles. James visits and talks to townspeople, but he is unable to help any of them in a meaningful way (except, perhaps, the french girl). James's death accomplishes nothing. The scenes following the shooting is that of all the townspeople still going about their lives still bearing their problems. The people did not find salvation through James, so why did James have to die? The title of the movie, CalvaryCalvary, makes it obvious that James is supposed to be related to Christ, but I don't see how.
