The need of a Matrix (TriologyTrilogy)

I always wondered why the hassle creating the Matrix anyway?

Yes, the machines need energy which can be harvested in the form of biological energy from humans. But why did they not just take animals, e.g. sheepssheep. Since the physiology of animals and humans is very similar, they would likewise be able to generate energy. Advantageous over humans though, it would be possible to hold them captive without creating a Matrix.
