Such a challenge would be difficult because nearly all "true story" type films have fiction in them, and how do you deal with those? So as long as the advertising media doesn't make the claim that it's true, it's probably OK.

Mar 24, 2016 at 6:55 comment added DA. @cde exactly my point. Fargo is fiction. They can make stuff up...including pretending that the story is based on a real event.
Mar 23, 2016 at 22:36 comment added cde @DA. umm, what? Fiction is by definition non-fiction.
Mar 23, 2016 at 14:21 comment added DA. There is no rule that works of fiction have to be non-fiction.

Jul 15, 2014 at 5:48 comment added Meat Trademark If your question is if there is a rule or law against this, no, there is no rule or law preventing it, otherwise it wouldn't be done. Many other movies have claimed to be true including 1985's Return of the Living Dead.

Jul 15, 2014 at 5:30 comment added Ankit This question is not specific to fargo. wikipedia already says that the claim is fictional. this is a question about the general rule. fargo is just used as an example.
