There is no doubt in my mind Smaug knew the ring existed from the dialogue he had with Bilbo (in the movie, not the book). There was more to the dialogue than what is stated here, including after Bilbo takes the ring off and Smaug says (something like), "Oh, there you are." He knew Bilbo had camouflaged himself somehow. He could hear and smell Bilbo. | |

From Smaug's Wikipedia page, "Smaug was intimately familiar with every last item within his hoard, and instantly noticed the theft of a relatively inconsequential cup by Bilbo Baggins." Could that be the "something shiny"? | |
