Vulcan already had Warp Drive for several centuries by then (That monastery colony in the show was 3 millennia old.), but it was very slow. Once the proto-Romulans flew out of scanner range of Vulcan and all its outposts, the Vulcans had no way to track them or otherwise figure out what their fate was.

Oct 17, 2013 at 0:32 comment added Synetech I didn’t realize they’d split that long ago; I always had the impression it was just a few generations. I still don’t think a space-faring civilization would have purposely buried a significant part of their history, and even a couple of millennia wouldn't be enough to wipe out their memories (we have records of significant historic events going back even longer). However, considering how strongly they react to avoid discussing private things like pon farr, mind-melds, etc. (out of embarrassment? ಠ_ఠ), I suppose they could have chosen to bury their connection to the oh-so emotional Romulans.
