My background is in math (BMath; Waterloo) and civil engineering (BASc, MASc; Toronto). As I learned to dislike statistics when I was studying math, fate provided me with the opportunity to do a master's thesis on applying good old-fashioned statistics to hydrology with the goal of finding improved methods of estimating underlying distributions from small samples. Fortunately, this relied heavily on Monte Carlo simulation and I was able to convince myself that it was based on software instead of statistics. I somehow ended up as a software developer working on real time control systems and ancillary applications for the broadcast industry for fifteen years and now work as a project manager for the development of call center software.

comment What does the “they've gone to plaid” joke mean?
Although I think it is just a coincidence, I'll point out that warp and weft are the two directions of yarn in weaving (of plaids and other things). It might be a very meta joke since plaid is at much higher level than warp. On the other hand, it's Mel Brooks. On the gripping hand, he was born in Brooklyn in the mid 20's and might have been exposed to the basics and vocabulary of the tailor at a youngman age.

I think @BilltheLizard is correct. I had forgotten there was a secret. I am not going to add this to my answer, but I will upvote Mr TheLizard if he answers.

comment I've never seen a James Bond movie, where should I start?
... tough to give any sort of objective answer to this kind of question. I stand by the strategy of watching ones from different eras, though.

There is a long run of mediocre films there. Enjoyable fluff, but nothing to really hook you.

comment How much would 400 weight of Gold actually have been worth?
A 400 weight seems to be a standard measure of 400 troy ounces nominal weight with an actual weight of between 350 and 430 ounces (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gold_bar). The range of 80 ounces makes this tough to answer precisely.

Also, it doesn't really sound like any of the named accents, not even close.

I'd noticed that after posting the question, but it sounds to me a little like an description he came up with after the movie...

Any chance they are automobile licence plates? There are some places/people who put these on the wall for ambience.

Agree with user54609 - I used to work as a developer on a broadcast automation system for a client from the UK, and PAL (25 fps) timecode goes from 00 to 24. (SECAM is also 25 fps, and NTSC, used in Canada, the US, South Korea, etc, is 30 fps)

comment Logo on screen during rain delay of baseball
There are actually better ways to notify affilates than forcing them to watch the screen (see Cue Tones, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cue_tone), and of course it's important to know how much time you have left - you can't charge anything for three quarters of a commercial!

Nothing I consider authoritative, hence my hedging and using the word "apparently" - sorry!

@Tom - where I live, "license" is a always verb, and "licence" may be either a noun or a verb.

And even further than in "Springfield (Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Legalized Gambling)" in "Midnight Rx".
