After thinking about it a bit more, I think the close votes may have to do with a specific interpretation of my question. The close-voters read the question as asking for a theory as to why Hitch used the long shots. While I'll admit I am curious about that, the main point of my question was to find out what motivated Hitch to use the long shots, which the think the answerers so far understand.

comment Why do characters turn off a car when stopped, even briefly, only to turn it back on again?
Even when stopped for... 10 seconds? In a situation where you know you're going to start it right back up again? How is it good habit? To my knowledge it's actually a waste of gas to stop then start it right back up again.
