I think the key is " M didn't want anyone else to die because of her"... seems the unofficial mission was to kill Silva so he couldn't do more large-scale harm... saving M would have been a bonus, but was not the ultimate goal. But either way could support your idea that he then killed Candie out of disgust over slavery.

As I recall, that scene includes both shots of Bond directly and shots of Bond in the mirror. I also recall thinking that the wound seemed to change sides, but then realizing it was the mirror.
