comment Is it a Tardis or the Tardis?
@Liath: It is seemingly a break of continuity. After 50 years of the series it is no surprise, there are some things contradictionary. So in the original episode 'An unearthly child' the writers said Susan invented the name Tardis, and later the name was extended to cover all ships of the same style. But there are some ways to save continuity. The simple possible explanation is, that Susan lied about creating the name. The more complicated would be, that she didn't invent the name Tardis, but the acronym (Time And Relative Dimension In Space).

comment How far back do I need to watch Doctor Who for it to still make sense?
I personal had a dislike in the beginning towards Matt Smith, and thought the first episodes with him are pretty weak. Also some strange errors that seem unneeded, like the reintroduction of the weeping angels changing the rules (they obviously can now look at each other without being turned to stone). The fifth season only starts to get better with the van Gogh episode.

comment “It doesn't work on Wood”… Evidence to the contrary?
I understood it that way, that the hundred-years-calculation was only working on that specific door. Not on wood in general. In a later episode (thee doctor who stayed for christmas) there comes a wooden cyberman, and the doctor fools it by saying he reverted his cannon, but it actually is a trick and he states afterwards that the sonic screwdriver doesn't work on wood.

comment How can the ending of “Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance” be explained?
Maybe, but it seemed strange. At the part the police is talking about talking her being member in the group, the first order was to arrest all members for interrogation. But they say at this moment, they already would've done this, but she is the only member. Can't remember details though, I have to rewatch it. But it seems unlikely only an error, they wouldn't have given up so fast, because they have a major crime with taking a girl hostage.

But the inspector said earlier she is the only member of that organization (so there is in reality no organization).
