Thought-provoking answer with a lot of good points I hadn't thought of. I wasn't even thinking about refueling needs. I'm especially surprised about the SCA needing 8000 pounds of ballast to fly properly—why was that? Perhaps Thule Air Base was considered a candidate refueling stop, which would bring the flight closer to overflying the Yukon. My guess now is that based on the information available about the SCA at the time there was some reason the writers chose the Yukon as plausible, but the reason was nonetheless obscure and perhaps irrelevant/inapplicable today.
