comment How did Maximus become a slave?
I cannot remember who it was as it has been several years since I saw the film but one of the slavers or fellow slaves mentions him being a desterter, I think it was as he was trying to disfigure the tatoo? Is it really a large gap? He is found, barely alive, by someone who sold him to a gladiator stable. Exactly what happens is hazy as we are seeing it from Maximus's point of view.

TBH I had forgotten it :-) However, I think the answer you gave is the only one which really makes sense!

No, I was leaving it open in case anyone else had any input but it has probably been left long enough

It has been a while since I saw the film but this makes sense.

+1 S you think that the issue was they were staying in the village at all, rather than staying there in particular?

comment Why did Daryl take the cash and jewelry?
Money has whatever value people think it has. People in a large community might still use traditional currency, someone who might not altogether be in their right mind might well simply accept it out of habit etc. The shinies are slightly more likely to be useful but having money is rarely worse than not having money and being as it is so easy to carry and conveniently to hand he may as well take it on the off chance.

comment Killing computers in movies
Sorry, I should have explained the context if that. It is a running joke with soldiers in my brothers unit how effective pistols (and guns generally) are made to look in war films. My brother did 22 years and explained that in an actual firefight (with the actual fear of death etc) a pistol is close to useless as anything more that point blank range. I am afraid I had no actual citations other than that, I can remove that point if needs be.

Hmmmm ... yes, I see where you are coming from. I did not think of putting it as a comment (busy day, brain not working proper), that might have been more appropriate I guess.

The main thing I wanted to add was the link as I thought it would be helpful but adding a just link does not really help and sets an undesirable trend so I added the explanatory text with it to explain the general context for the link.
