comment Was any of 'The Hunt for Red October' necessary?
He does seem pretty switched on, is there any actual reference to him being better than other sonar operators? I know he is better than the other Dallas one but the other one is clearly a trainee.

Sounds enchanting! Anyway, could you provide some more details - language, cinema/DVD/TV, any famous actors etc.?

Fair point, I watched the first half a few days ago hence the question occurred to me. Thanks for trying to help.

I read it but it was many years ago (it is one of my favourite examples of a book to film translation that works by emphasising different aspects)! However, in the film the fact remains that the Red October was detectable even when it's caterpillar drive was operating. Given that it would seen that the technology does not work - so what was the fuss about?

But it was working correctly when Jones spotted it. Initially the Dallas lost the RO (when the drive switched on) and thought that the sonar readings were just seismic fluctuations. Jones researched further and worked it out.

But it didn't work? They could detect it, even a sonar operator on the fly could make the relevant adjustments. Would it really be worth all of that trouble?

I thought that the Dallas was tracking it and then lost it when the drive was engaged (apart from the singing) and later Jones kept investigating and eventually played the sound at 10x speed?

I thought that the directors stated they had not provided the definitive explanation of what happened and therefore this might or might not have been done?

I do not have the sources to make it a proper answer, it is just vaguely bouncing at the back of my memory!

Goodfellas? There is a narration by the leading character of the difference between mob life and mundane life. Also Fight Club seems in keeping with the quote?

comment How did Maximus become a slave?
I am not an expert but generally depression means people find it difficult to motivate themselves. My impression, when the actual arena opened, was that the 'joy of battle' motivated him a little. It was enough to get him going and gave him something to vent his rage on.

I don't think he cared at that point. It did not seem to occur to him that he might be able to get to Caesar until the slave owner mentioned it. Do not underestimate how depression can effect people. At that point his wife and child were dead, as far as he was concerned had nothing to life for until the potential for revenge appeared.

I cannot remember who it was as it has been several years since I saw the film but one of the slavers or fellow slaves mentions him being a desterter, I think it was as he was trying to disfigure the tatoo? Is it really a large gap? He is found, barely alive, by someone who sold him to a gladiator stable. Exactly what happens is hazy as we are seeing it from Maximus's point of view.
