comment How would the WOPR super computer (“Joshua”) in War Games compare with modern computers?
Leaving the password slot machine issue aside, it’s hard to tell what kind of operation did WOPR need to do to try a single code… They mentioned Joshua is “sending random numbers to the silos”, which would require not only strong WOPR, but also extremely capable communication channel (and no lockout mechanism in the missiles)…
comment How is the fluent conversation with spacecraft possible in Capricorn One?
Watching the family conversation scene once again and paying special attention, it seems you are right! There is a single sentence by the TV commentator, stating “This is the first time the crew has been close enough to Earth to make normal conversation feasible.” Obviously, I did not notice it while watching the movie for the first time! (Even though the prior communications are still filmed in a way suggesting fluent conversation, but this might be explained as a film storytelling shortcut; there seem to be no true plotholes.)
comment Do Frodo and Bilbo live forever at the end of the Lord of the Rings trilogy?
As Arwen was a half-elf, she was given the choice whether to be counted as elf, or human; she chose humanity to stay with Aragorn. (“for mine is the choice of Lúthien, and as she so have I chosen, both the sweet and the bitter”, and “The uttermost choice is before you: to repent and go to the Havens […] or else to abide the Doom of Men.”)
comment Why does 2001: A Space Odyssey not provide an explanation of its ending? Are we supposed to read the book?
Actually, the movie is not an adaptation of the book at all, they were created concurrently and the book was published after the movie release.
