The Godfather is a 1972 American crime film directed by Francis Ford Coppola based on Mario Puzo's 1969 novel of the same name. The film is about Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando), the aging Don of The Corleone Mafia family transferring control of his clandestine empire to his reluctant son, Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) who has just returned from WWII.
