Can anyone help me remember a 1940's film about a woman with a recurring memory. There is a scene in an auction and she ends up going to a lighthouse and goes up some stairs using a hidden door. She ends up falling to her death on the rocks below.

I am very sketchy about details but would be pleased if someone can remember which film this scene is from. I think it had someone well known like James Mason or Gregory Peck definitely from that era anyway.

Hi Christian, I think it was colour. It was a Hitchcock style thriller. Just can't remember more but would love to see it again! – Babs Feb 10 at 19:08

Ok, it sounds like it could be a sketchy recollection of Hitchcock's Vertigo.

The details are not identical, but the era, the sort of actor (James Stewart), and the tower (it is a bell tower in Vertigo, not a lighthouse).

A female character falls to her death accidentally via a trapdoor.

I just feel I have to mention it because you said 'sketchy' and it does sound very similar in scope.

In case it jogs your memory, Vertigo is also very famous for its use of the 'Dolly Zoom' effect

Thanks for your answers iandotkelly and atticae but I know Vertigo really well and watched it only last week. I'm sure I'll remember more of this at some point ... it's called getting old!! Best wishes Babs – Babs Feb 19 at 12:05
