# “Road” picture about guys in a tank, possibly set in the Middle East

A group of guys (soldiers) area in a tank, they're Americans I think, who are either lost, defected, went AWOL, or something. They travel throughout a desert area and I cannot remember whether they "make it" or not. I seem to remember them slowly losing members of the platoon as they went along.

For me the most memorable scene is when one of the group goes nuts/left on his own and is strung up by locals against a rock with a grenade perched on his neck or head or some place precarious -- so that when he is cut away or shifted (saved) the thing falls, hits the ground and blows the soldier up and his savior(s). I can't remember whether he was saved or not.

In another scene, the group's commander catches one of the men drinking something like power steering fluid, radiator fluid, or something and getting drunk/high.

There is another recent movie about a tank that also gets out on its own (Israeli maybe?). The film I'm looking for is older.

I remember this film being good, gritty as @#@%$#$! and good. Saw it about 1996.

Is there any response to the answers below? –  TylerShads Jun 20 '12 at 14:06
This is a bit late but I was looking for the same movie. The scene I remember most is when the tank grinds over an old arab . The end of the film finds them on the edge of a huge cliff. –  user5663 Aug 4 '13 at 11:50
@RickJames Indeed both those incidents happen in The Beast of War (though the cliff scene is not yet the end of the film). –  Napoleon Wilson Dec 23 '13 at 19:16

Hmm, I once saw a movie called The Beast of War (actually just The Beast in my version) some time ago which I don't have much recollection of (other than that I also found it quite good). But I know it was about a lone Soviet tank crew (though played by Americans) getting lost in Afghanistan during the Soviet invasion, controlled by a tyrannic commander who would never give up this damn thing even in the obvious presence of defeat.

Wikipedia even says:

Daskal entraps him and orders Kaminski (Don Harvey) and Golikov (Stephen Baldwin) to tie him to a rock, with a grenade behind his head to serve as booby-trap for the mujahideen.

Which matches the first scene you remember. And after rewatching it, I can also confirm that there is a scene when they are camping at night and the commander catches one of the men drinking brake fluid because "it keeps him steady on the gun".

And its age (being from 1988) also seems to be a good match.

Sounds very similer to the details, good job! –  DForck42 May 16 '12 at 20:09
@DForck42 Why no up-vote then. Sorry for the rep-greediness, of course this is entirely your decision and I respect that, but it made me wonder after your "good job"-comment, as reputation is the driving force of the SE framework. –  Napoleon Wilson May 16 '12 at 20:34
i usualyl wati until the movie has actually been identified –  DForck42 May 16 '12 at 21:22
@John Don't forget to accept the answer if this is the correct answer. –  Kevin Howell May 17 '12 at 15:05
@DForck42 Well, I can understand that (and like said, it is your decision), but a good answer (not implying mine is one) stays a good answer (considering the given information from the question), no matter if it is the one the OP wanted to hear, as he's the one to finally decide on the absolute correctness. The up-vote button is not the accept button. –  Napoleon Wilson May 22 '12 at 15:54

Are you thinking of the George Clooney movie Three Kings, maybe? I know there is a scene with a guy drinking mouthwash to get drunk.

I don't think it really fits. But well, it's worth a try. –  Napoleon Wilson May 16 '12 at 19:31
This was my first thought - but it was released in 1999 –  iandotkelly Aug 29 '12 at 17:06
