In The Master, there are two scenes with a reference to China. The first time we hear of it is when Freddie leaves Doris behind and joins the crew of a ship leaving for Shanghai. The second time is at the end of the film when Freddie and Lancaster part ways forever. Dodd sings him the song Slow Boat to China.

What is the significance of this reference?
