I'm trying to find a (tv?) movie from the late 70s or early 80s. As I recall it, a woman and her young son are not expecting their husband/father to return from the (Vietnam?) war as he has been declared lost in battle. They miss him very much. But he does return, and the reunion is not entirely happy. I'm quite sure it was a US production, but I don't remember anything about the title, the actors etc.

Sounds like "Brothers", just that this one is a 2009 film :P –  Man Dec 10 '13 at 16:08

Sounds similar to The Return of Martin Guerre or the US remake Sommersby. –  his Jan 8 at 23:06

I'm pretty sure this isn't what you are thinking of, because its a sci-fi, but the description details match The Imposter with Gary Sinise, except it's a war vs aliens and the plot line is that the main character might be an imposter when he returns from war unexpectedly. –  Jeff-Inventor ChromeOS Aug 23 at 3:09

Is it Combat Shock? It doesn't match exactly, but sounds similar.

The film is about the soldier's struggles after the war. He is unemployed, his baby son has deformations, and is always arguing with his wife. The synopsis also mentions that he was believed to have died:

He calls his father to ask for money. His father thinks the call is a prank, because he believes his son died in Saigon. Frankie explains that he was reported killed 15 years ago but he made it out alive and spent three years in an army hospital recuperating.

Two other possibilities are Cease Fire and Distant Thunder, but I couldn't find very many details on them.

In the movie "The Others", Nicolle Kidman and her children are in what seems to be a haunted house. Partway through the film, her husband returns from war. It's surreal and dreamy, and he ends up leaving again not long after. I'm pretty sure the war is not Vietnam, so it's probably a different movie. Just thought I'd throw it out there.

What about Rolling Thunder from 1977? The soldier returns home to find out that his wife is with local sheriff. However he was POW held long (and tortured) by VC.
