Early 80's movie. An American preteen boy (more generally of white race) decides to know why his father doesn't return from Africa (or maybe it was the Amazons... I remember tropical jungles) and travels there. He makes friend with an aboriginal boy and together they try to find his father... Which they finally do.

I saw this movie on my 5th birthday night and watching it again will be so nostalgic.

This may be a long shot, but if you reverse the roles of the father and son, it sounds a bit like The Emerald Forest (1985), where it is the son who goes missing in the jungle and his father goes searching for him.

Here's the trailer:

Sounds like a slightly mis-remembered Mosquito Coast.

Please explain why Mosquito Coast might be the film that the OP is looking for. – coleopterist Dec 10 '13 at 18:55
