I am trying to identify a movie I saw on TV in the late 1960s or early 1970s.

The main character is a kid whose family has moved from California to a small town in New England. The owner of a store in the town calls the kid "California".

The kid has an older brother in the military. I think the older brother does something shameful, like going AWOL.

Absent WithOut Leave - it means when you leave the army without permission to do so. –  monkjack Jun 26 '13 at 17:38
